In 1956, backstage at New York’s arrymore Theater, a 33-year-old Marcel arceau prepares himself for a performance that resonates with the echoes of his past. As the strains of a childhood melody fill the room, Marcel
is transported back to 1931 France. At seven years old, captivated by the silent allure of Charlie Chaplin, Marcel is determined to emulate his hero. His tranquil family life, his joy of exploring his burgeoning mime skills are soon overshadowed by the rise of the impending war.
His teenage romance with Edith blossoms against this turbulent backdrop, only to be
shattered by the Nazi invasion. Marcel’s frantic search for her ends at her
abandoned home, the silence there speaking volumes of the war’s cruelty.
Sent by their parents to the safety of their Aunt Suzanne’s home in the countryside,
Marcel, his brother Alain, and a cousin conceal their Jewish identities.
While Alain mobilizes a youth resistance movement, Marcel grapples with school and growing suspicions from his peers.
The brothers’ paths converge in the resistance, where Marcel is reunited with Edith, who survived while her parents
did not.
Marcel Marceau has been a figure in my life since I was a child. Growing up in educational theater, participating in festivals and
continuing that tradition as a high school theater teacher myself, I knew the impact of Marceau’s “art of silence.” I, in fact, won a contest for mime while in high school and my own students when I became a teacher won several festivals in the mime category. It wasn’t, however, until I began writing the story of this time period in his life that I realized the courage of the young man who became an international treasure.
The story of Marcel Marceau is one that is not well known. Like many of his “Greatest Generation” he did not speak of his life during the war. The details of his young life are sketchy at best, but the facts remain of his quiet heroics. As the writer, I did as much research as I could to find out what life was like, the historical events surrounding him and his place within them. In my research I discovered the horror of Oradour-sur-Glane and knew that it had to be a part of the story, one that would have no doubt changed the life of a sixteen-year-old boy and turned his spine into steel.
I hope that this fictionalized story based on facts will be told. The heroism of these brave freedom fighters, a generation who sacrificed
so much, some even making the ultimate sacrifice, needs to be told. It will, I trust, inspire others become the best versions of themselves.
Returning to 1956, Marcel takes the stage to perform “Bip Remembers,” a controversial mime piece reflecting on the war’s horrors.
The roaring applause confirms his transformation from a dream-stricken boy in war-torn France to an internationally celebrated artist, whose life’s work in “The Art of Silence” teaches peace and touches hearts across the globe.
